Role

The role of the electron microscope operator in the company is to drive future sales of our equipment by using the electron microscope to document the capabilities of our sample preparation equipment relative to other products in the market.

Responsibilities

  • To use and maintain our Laboratory equipment which mainly consists of a FEG SEM, Cryo preparation system, Oxford Instruments EDX, J.A. Woollam Ellipsometer and various other sample preparation systems.
  • Co-ordinate scheduling of work activities with internal and external customers.
  • Run sample analysis for development projects and write subsequent reports.
  • Run customer samples and demonstrations of our processes.
  • Implement and maintain best lab practices by creating/modifying standard operating procedures and ensuring adherence through systematic processes.
  • Run competitor analysis activities and write application notes and reports.
  • Performs routine duties involving care and cleaning of electron microscope laboratory and ancillary equipment.
  • Interface to the manufacturer's engineers to ensure optimal performance of the instruments.
  • To train and supervise other staff members in general operation of the equipment.
  • Development and implementation of new methods/techniques in cryo-EM.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Degree in Physics, Life Sciences or Engineering would be an advantage.

Required Experience

Minimum 2 to 5 years of practical experience using FEG SEM's, probably working in or running a microscopy suite, which prepared and analysed samples on a daily basis. Experience in 2 or more of the following fields:

  • Life sciences
  • Materials Science
  • Semiconductors
  • Oil and Gas

  • Experience managing expensive instrumentation, a laboratory supply inventory, reagent preparation, and waste disposal.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently in planning work activities in order to accomplish research goals.
  • Experience handling chemical and biologically hazardous materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver to schedules.

The successful candidate will have experience or knowledge in:

  • Analysing samples in a SEM.
  • Coating thickness measurements using Ellipsometry (preferably J.A. Woollam).
  • SEM sample preparation systems and processes.
  • Six Sigma and statistical analysis.
  • Preparing and delivering reports.

Preferred Skills

  • Design of experiments.
  • Cryo sample preparation and use.
  • Experience with FIB-SEM and TEM would be advantageous.
  • Other sample preparation techniques such as critical point drying freeze drying, plasma etchers, plunge freezers and ion milling would be a significant advantage.
