Job Title: Transport Planner

Role Summary:

To plan the company's fleet of vehicles and staff in an efficient manner including the allocation of jobs, routes and drivers. Carry out administrative duties for the transport department including recording deliveries, collating performance data and upholding compliance monitoring and recording.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Transport Planning:

  • To create a balanced transport plan that delivers high levels of customer service whilst also ensuring that all vehicles are efficiently routed and planned to ensure high levels of asset utilisation at the lowest possible cost
  • Balance demand between the company fleet and outsourced suppliers
  • Monitor sub-contractor performance, ensuring high levels of service are provided and deliveries are made on schedule and without incident or damage
  • Complete all administrative tasks associated with the role including delivery schedule, booking in deliveries to sites, collating site restrictions and ensuring the driver has all relevant paperwork and training whilst providing ETA's to sites when required
  • Liaise with other departments to provide a flexible and responsive, first class customer service experience from transport, balanced with department objectives
  • When required, ensure effective planning of delicate loads or special projects
  • Maintain a clean and safe working area and equipment
  • Compliance with Company policies and training requirements
  • Where necessary manage the drivers behaviour and expectations
  • Where necessary manage the warehouse team performance and responsiveness

Transport Planning KPI

  • Deliver on requested date

Transport Administration:

  • Ensure compliance with all DVSA requirements, government legislation and FORS, including tachograph readings, driver hours, maintenance schedules and health and safety law are achieved, and any documents are recorded and filed correctly
  • Record and file the planned maintenance of the company's fleet
  • Assist the Transport Supervisor with quality checks to ensure legal requirements are being adhered to, including vehicle checks, tachograph use, driving hours, vehicle condition, regular safety inspections, vehicle gross weights and vehicle load security
  • Vehicle maintenance/purchasing - ensuring fuel cards, breakdown cover, warranty, MOT and vehicle repairs are conducted, recorded and filed accordingly

Key skills/qualifications

  • At least 5 years' experience in the transport industry with knowledge of transport legislation and road haulage (CPC licence holder desirable or working towards it)
  • Preferably hold an LGV/HGV Class 2 License and a full and clean UK driving license
  • Experience in route planning and knowledge of the UK road network essential
  • Good knowledge of transport management systems, routing software systems, vehicle tracking and hand-held devices for instant proof of delivery
  • Excellent communication skills in both written and verbal English
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office
  • Ability to prioritise workload
  • Ability to step up as deputy and cover the Transport supervisor during their absence
