Job Overview:

To develop, manage and ensure the delivery of Companies media activities, with the aim of increasing the profile of the organisation in the UK and internationally, through development of plans and strategies, building relationships with key journalists, including pitching key stories, as well as key influencers and internal stakeholders, and leading and motivating the media team.

Key Responsibilities:

Proactive and reactive media relations: (50% of time)

  • Develop and execute the annual PR and media strategy, to help deliver the overall communication objectives for the organisation.
  • Lead, brief, approve and be responsible for the delivery and evaluation of initiatives delivered by the media team and external PR agencies.
  • Manage multiple projects and workflow, including team resourcing.
  • Lead the development of creative proposals for media/fundraising appeals such as newspaper Christmas appeals, UK Aid Match and Radio Four.
  • Ensure fast and accurate responses to media enquiries and identifying new stories that provide opportunity to comment.
  • Develop relationships with journalists and influencers in the UK and internationally to support the successful delivery of media plans.
  • Ensure digital communications are integrated with PR and media activities.

Global support (15% of time)

  • Support internationally-based teams, including Ireland and the US, in delivering media activity, and ensure timely media relations advice and support to offices in programme countries.
  • Help oversee the appointment and management of external media and PR agencies to ensure delivery and value for money when required.

Best practice development: (10% of time)

  • Develop media communications best practice across the company's global teams.
  • Provide guidance and support to in-country communications staff.

Issues management; (10% of time)

  • To support the Director of News and Senior Management Team in addressing any media issues that pose a reputational risk and support where appropriate with crisis management activities.
  • Ensure that the issues management processes in relation to media, celebrity ambassadors and social media are kept up to date and relevant.

Management: (15% of time)

  • Motivate and lead a team of three Senior Media and PR Officers, the Senior Social Media Officer, the Social Media Officer and Global Social Media Officer, as well as freelance staff as appropriate.
  • Encourage team and individual professional development.
  • Manage the PR and Media budget line.

Knowledge (Education & Related Experience):

  • An excellent ability to identify news angles in campaigning and fundraising activity.
  • An expert understanding of UK and global media gained through at least five years of experience working with or in a media environment.
  • Significant experience of securing media coverage around policy and consumer campaigns.
  • Strong leadership and management experience with the ability to prioritise and manage workloads.
  • Experience of line management and team leadership.
