As the Senior Mechanical Design Engineer you will be supporting the continuous improvement of their growing range of innovative chemistry equipment. You will be working in their R&D team and liaising closely with Production to help manage the lifecycle of new and existing products.

  • Reporting to the R&D Manager
  • Managing and delivering product improvement projects (proactive and reactive Continuous Improvement)
    • Mechanical and electromechanical design upgrades at component and system level using SolidWorks software within a SolidWorks PDM system
    • Quick and efficient product engineering solutions to minimise assembly downtime
    • Sourcing (materials, suppliers, sub-contractors)
    • Risk analysis and mitigation of component and supplier bottlenecks
    • Testing (establishing test protocols, collecting, and analysing results, reporting)
    • Identifying and working with consultants and external partners, e.g., on electronics design
    • Planning and costing (project plans, timelines, budgeting)
    • Preparation and updating of documentation, marketing material, instructions, production packs, BOMs, checking procedures, FATs, QA, testing, etc.
    • Reporting (presenting updates and progress reports)
  • Contributing to New Product Development projects
    • Assisting in the design of products and creating innovative solutions to meet customer needs
    • Identification, evaluation, and integration of mechanical and electronic components, including power supplies, PCBs, motors, fittings, connectors, sensors, etc.
  • Helping out other departments as and when required, including:
    • Marketing - creating drawings and models for marketing material
    • Production - designing jigs, troubleshooting

To be successful in this role of Senior Mechanical Design Engineer we would love to speak to anyone who has experience of:

  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 5 years minimum working experience in an industrial or R&D environment with a track record of delivering projects on time and to budget
  • Continuous Improvement / product lifecycle management in an engineering environment, preferably in the scientific equipment manufacturing sector
  • Design experience including both mechanical and electronic system components
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes and materials (e.g., machining, moulding, casting, sheet metal, coatings, etc.)
  • Excellent knowledge of 3D SolidWorks
  • Experience sourcing materials from suppliers
  • Full driving license (no specialist license is required)
